DENPASAR: A video showing a girl being assaulted by several acquaintances that went viral on social media has prompted a police investigation.

The girl in the video spoke Indonesian with a thick Balinese accent.

Denpasar Police chief Snr. Comr. I Wayan Sunartha said his officers were trying to determine the identities of the girls in the video.

He urged the victim to file a police report. Yet, he warned that even without an official complaint from the victim, the police had a legal right to investigate an assault-and-battery case.

“We are still investigating the case. We don’t know where the video was recorded. The motorbikes in the footage bear Bali license plates. So, we will start the investigation by tracing the owners of the motorbikes.”

By Tuesday afternoon, the police had identified the victim as 15-year-old Kiki Ariyani, a resident of Sidakarya in south Denpasar.
