On the trail of romance in Indonesia

Natural beauty and cultural diversity are undoubtedly Indonesia’s main claims to international fame. That also makes for romantic spots for couples to spend some quality time together.
Here are picks of some of the most charming areas of the country.
Bandung
Now only a short 2.5-hour drive from Jakarta, the city, with its tropical Art Deco architecture and temperate weather, is an ideal escape for lovebirds. It is renowned for its great dining opportunities, especially restaurants perched in the hills with great views of the city at night (be sure to pick up cakes and other sweets to bring home with you).
There also are the flourishing factory outlets for clothing and accessories, plus a range of quality hotels with affordable rates.
Tia, who is from Bandung but now works in Jakarta, says every day is a holiday in the West Java capital.
“It was dubbed ‘Paris van Java’ by the Dutch during colonial times. That is really something being compared to the world’s most romantic city, and I also can still sense Bandung’s romantic ambiance, especially from its hills and cool weather,” she said.
Bali
The resort island is, of course, a given as a romantic getaway in Indonesia, with its legendary charms earning it a worldwide reputation. A visit to “paradise” includes its sand and surf, temples, great restaurants and the chance to be pampered at some of the region’s best spas.
Tussie Ayu spent a five-day honeymoon in Bali.
“The island is not far from Jakarta yet its ambiance is very soothing, and is a world away from the bustling hectic capital, especially in Ubud,” she said.
Spas were her comfort zone. “My husband and I enjoyed a honeymoon-package spa. Why not? I heard Bali’s spas are the best in the world.”
Yogyakarta
Tradition reigns in this Javanese city, with its arts such as batik and puppet shows. A must-visit is the old-world charm of the sultan’s palace. Bargains galore, and atmosphere, are to be had at Jl. Maliboro.
Then head out of town to the haunting temple complex of Prambanan, or sift through the stunning silverwork at Kotagede.
And then there is the food. Try gudeg (jackfruit stewed in coconut milk served with savory side dishes), a Yogya culinary staple, or fried noodles Javanese style. At night, sit on the sidewalk for a relaxed lesehan dining experience.
Lombok
Some people say Lombok – often described as a more laid-back version of neighboring Bali – is waiting to be discovered. For those who have already visited the area, it quickly wins an enduring place in their hearts.
Young writer Okky Madasari spent a two-day honeymoon in the Gilis, Lombok’s three small islands that are the main tourist hub.
“We stayed in Gili Meno island in the last week of the year, for five days. The island is quiet, we rarely saw people and vehicles,” she said.
As newlyweds they enjoyed the moments of quiet intimacy, with no TV and only the sound of waves lapping on the seashore.
“We could cuddle anywhere, anytime,” she said.
They fell in love with the islands, and have since returned four times.
Raja Ampat
Here is an area that is quickly becoming one of the most desired places for couples to escape, especially if they love diving. Focus on an immersion in Papua’s marine wonders, with coral reefs, and thousands of fish species. Pack up and go now, while it is still a pristine paradise.
And … Jakarta!
We may complain about the state of the city, but it’s still a thriving capital with the nation’s best nightspots, great culinary experiences and top-notch hotels at very inexpensive rates (compared to the rest of the world). Let’s accentuate the positive, and Jakarta’s very special jive.
