JAKARTA: Former vocalist of top pop band Peterpan, Nazriel “Ariel” Ilham, who was imprisoned for producing and distributing pornographic videos in 2010, is being allowed a taste of freedom before his prison sentence has concluded.

The head of the surveillance division at Kebon Waru Penitentiary in Bandung, Ahmad Tohari, said the star was taking part in an assimilation program that allows convicts who will be released soon to work outside the prison.

“He has been working since Jan. 19 at an architecture firm in Bandung,” Ahmad told tempo.co on Thursday.

He added that Ariel followed all the procedures required for the program. The singer is allowed to go to the office in the morning and return to prison in the afternoon.

Ariel is scheduled to be released in July 2012. The 30-year-old was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison and ordered to pay a Rp 250 million (US$28,000) fine.
