Letter: Stand up for nonsmokers’ rights

A- A A+

As a user of the train, I felt relieved after reading an article on Feb. 2, that PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) has been promoting awareness of its nonsmoking policy on board its trains.

However, when I took the 8:47 a.m. economy train on Feb. 6 from Bogor to Depok, I was disappointed to find people smoking behind me.

Although PT KAI has been working on raising awareness, many passengers have not heard about the new nonsmoking policy in the train’s carriages.

Because the train officer was not there, I told my fellow passengers to put out his cigarette. To put it mildly, he was not happy with my request. It would be nice from now on if PT KAI would make announcements in all train carriages so that its passengers are aware of this new policy.

Through this letter, I also would like to remind the readers, both smokers and nonsmokers alike, about the dangers of secondhand smoke.

The government has issued a regulation and we as Indonesians have to obey the rules. For smokers, you have to respect the nonsmokers. For nonsmokers, do not be afraid to pursue your rights to be free from secondhand smoke.
