JAKARTA: Bowing to public demand to improve the air quality in busy North Jakarta, the administration is to build a 50-kilometer bicycle lane.

North Jakarta Mayor Bambang Sugiyono said that his office had set up the project and expected it to be completed later this year, kompas.com reported on Monday.

“We are still waiting for the Jakarta transportation agency to disburse the budget for the project,” he said.

According to Bambang, the exclusive lane would stretch from Jl. Marina Raya to Jl. Akses Marunda and along the East Flood Canal.

“The lane will connect East, Central and West Jakarta,” he said.

The lane will be located on the left side of the road, Bambang added, while a separator will be built along the lane in accident-prone stretches of road, such as Jl. Cakung Calincing and Jl. Yos Sudarso.
