Text your say: Indie gubernatorial candidates

A- A A+

Your comments on the prospects of several pairs of independent candidates in the city gubernatorial election scheduled in July:

The registration of the independent candidates for the Jakarta governor position will open opportunities for informal leaders in regions or maybe in the international level to participate in competing to win formal positions in the government more easily.

Nowadays, many governors and other regional leaders, who come from political parties, think more about the interests of their parties, including financial contribution, rather than their people.

Such a condition may encourage regional leaders to become involved in corruption as they need money for contributions for their political parties.

Therefore, we should support the move by independent candidates to take part in gubernatorial elections in Jakarta and elsewhere in this country.

Independent candidates have the same opportunity in every election.

To gain maximum ballots in order to win the election, they should have many supporters from outside political parties.

The problem is that political parties have been built for many years.

They are powerful; they have links to some influential government officials; they have persons in the election commissions, and most importantly, they have lots of money.

It depends on how much capital they personally own and are willing to shell out on campaigns or how savvy they are in masterminding a potential deadlock scenario.

Don’t hold your breath, though, most likely major players have learned their lessons on the national scale.
