The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will operate its own detention center next month, a KPK spokesman says.
The center will be located within the KPK headquarters in Kuningan, South Jakarta.
“At this stage, we have completed about 70 to 80 percent of the construction. It’s expected to be finished next month,” said KPK spokesperson Johan Budi on Friday as quoted by tribunnews.com
The detention center is regulated under the Law and Human Rights Ministerial Decree issued on Jan. 12. The idea to build the center was conceived after the controversial case of bribery convict Artalyta Suryani in late 2010. Artalyta, a businesswoman, was caught by members of the Judicial Mafia Taskforce enjoying a life of luxury while during serving her jail time at the Pondok Bambu penitentiary.
Artalyta was sentenced in 2008 for bribing prosecutor Urip Tri Gunawan, who had been leading a team investigating the Bank Indonesia liquidity support (BLBI) cases implicating tycoon Sjamsul Nursalim. Sjamsul was known to be Artalyta’s associate.
Thus far, suspects and defendants in numerous graft cases have been detained in several penitentiaries, while the convicts are imprisoned at the Cipinang Penitentiary in East Jakarta. (tas)
