Police say that reputed gang leader and murder suspect John Refra Kei, 49, tested positive for crystal methamphetamine after his arrest in an East Jakarta hotel room last week.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said that detectives would investigate John’s alleged drug use in their probe.

John was shot in the leg by officers as he fled a purported drug party with 80s actress Alba Fuad, who also tested positive for narcotics, according to detectives.

The police allege that John appeared on CCTV footage at the Swiss-Belhotel in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, after PT Sanex Steel Indonesia owner Tan Harry Tantono was found murdered in his hotel room on Jan. 26.

Tan, also known as Ayung, and John were said to be arguing over a debt that John and his men went to collect.

Detectives also allege that John had a role in the 2004 murder of Basri Sangaji, a rival gang leader from John’s hometown in Maluku. That killing was also reportedly connected to rivalry in the debt collection business.

John was previously convicted of torture for using an axe to cut off the fingers of two residents of Tual, Southeast Maluku.

He was also implicated in deadly clashes with Flores gangs that killed four and injured dozens at the South Jakarta District Court in September 2010.
