Tangerang gets new task force

I

n an effort to curb the steady rise in the number of crimes over the past year in Tangerang regency, the precinct police have formed a special task force to handle crime.

“We cannot stop crime, but we can curb and suppress the number of criminal cases,” Tangerang Police chief Sr. Comr. Bambang Priyo Andogo told The Jakarta Post over the weekend.

The team consists of selected police officers from 23 sub-precinct police stations that monitor 33 districts across the regency and detectives at the precinct station.

Bambang said the team was assigned to take preventive measures by intensifying community monitoring and empowerment in each district.

For each successful job, the team will receive cash prizes.

“If the team manages to successfully resolve crimes in a district, they will receive a Rp 20 million [US$2,200] bonus,” Bambang said.

Senior detective at the precinct, Comr. Shinto Silitonga, said that the precinct police received a total of 4,800 reports of criminal cases in 2011, 772 of which were handled by the precinct while the rest were tackled at the 23 sub-precinct stations.

“We managed to solve 518 cases or 67 percent of the 772 cases,” he said.

Only 1,686 (42 percent) of 4,028 cases handled at sub-precinct stations were brought to a successful conclusion. Most of the cases dealt with by the police were robbery and vehicle theft.

“We expect that the number of criminal cases in Tangerang regency will remain high this year and therefore we formed the special joint team to handle the crimes,” Shinto said.

He said that starting this year police supervision around the region would be improved by mobilizing two-thirds of the regency’s total 1,400 personnel.

“The only handicap we have in curbing crimes in the regency is the lack of officers. Ideally, one police officer should be responsible for 500 people, but here in Tangerang an officer has to watch over 3,000 people,” he said.

He said that districts that were prone to crime included Pondok Aren, Cikupa, Pasar Kemis, Curug and Serpong, all of which shared similar characteristics as industrial areas with high populations.
