JP/Arief SuhardimanJP/Arief SuhardimanThe anti-graft Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has urged Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng to provide honest testimony before the Jakarta Corruption Court over the high-profile Rp 191.7 billion (US$21.3 million) corruption scandal in a project commissioned by the ministry.

As requested by the prosecutors for the KPK, Andi is scheduled on Wednesday to take the witness stand to testify against defendant Muhammad Nazaruddin, an ousted Democratic Party treasurer.

“We hope Pak Andi will tell the truth about what he knows about the case,” KPK spokesman Johan Budi told reporters on Tuesday. “So the case may clearly unfold.”

Nazaruddin is accused of masterminding the bribery scheme centering on the athletes’ village construction project for last year’s SEA Games by securing the bid for construction company PT Duta Graha Indah (DGI).

Nazaruddin has been indicted with accepting Rp 4.6 billion in bribes, in the form of five checks, from DGI official Mohamad El Idris— who is now serving a two-year prison sentence — via Nazaruddin’s confidante Yulianis and Oktarina Furi.

Oktarina is a former personal assistant to Nazaruddin’s wife Neneng Sri Wahyuni—who is a suspect in another questionable procurement case. Both Oktarina and Yulianis are former marketing officials at Nazaruddin’s Permai Group, a holding company in which he is believed to have run dozens of businesses as proxies to bid for government projects that were then subcontracted to larger companies in exchange for money.

KPK prosecutors will also present House of Representatives secretary general Nining Indrasaleh, as a witness at Wednesday’s session of Nazaruddin's trial.
