Bus operator, drivers face sanctions after accidents

KOMPAS/RIZA FATHONI

The Jakarta Transportation Agency says it may levy sanctions on bus operator Mayasari Bakti and its drivers after two separate accidents in as many days, pending a police investigation.

The accidents were currently under investigation by the Jakarta Police’s traffic directorate, agency chief Udar Pristono said on Tuesday. “Once we have the results from the police, we will have a firm basis for penalizing the drivers or the company.”

The investigations would determine whether the accidents were caused by driver error, vehicle defect or poor maintenance, Udar added.

“If the police state that the fault lies with the company, we are ready to issue stern penalties. We can revoke the company’s permit for operating on its routes.”

If found negligent, the drivers could have their permits and driver’s licenses revoked, according to Umar.

Separately, Adj. Sr. Comr. Yakub Dedi Karyawan, the traffic directorate’s safety and security unit chief, said on Tuesday that officers would question the management of the Mayasari Bakti.

Yakub also said that the police were analyzing the Mayasari’s accident record over the last year.

“We need to know the root of these accidents, whether it’s of managerial failure or a failure of the system,” Yakub said.

Yakub was referring to the setoran system, which requires drivers to pay a fixed rental fee to bus operators every day. Critics have said that the system encourages reckless driving.

A motorcyclist was killed early Monday morning after a Mayasari Bakti bus crashed into several vehicles in East Jakarta.

The bus was heading to Kampung Rambutan, East Jakarta, around 3:30 a.m. at 60 kilometers an hour when it collided with a taxi parked in front of a convenience store, according to police.

The bus then struck a passing motorcycle, killing its driver instantly and seriously injuring its passenger.

The collision propelled the taxi into two street vendor carts.

The bus continued forward, colliding with a public minivan and another motorbike before crashing into a gas station and coming to a stop.

The police detained the bus driver, Supriyadi, for questioning. Investigators suspect that the driver may not have been concentrating or that the bus’ brakes malfunctioned.

On Sunday, 12 people were injured when one of the company’s buses plying the route between Kampung Rambutan and Kalideres rear ended a Transjakarta bus at the Slipi Kemanggisan stop in West Jakarta.

The Mayasari Bakti bus, whose driver was allegedly using a cellular phone, was in the dedicated lane for Transjakarta buses.
