Jakarta residents who use public transportation account for only 11 percent of the total population due to poor management and safety, said Tulus Abadi from the Indonesian Consumer Protection Foundation (YLKI).

“[The proportion of Jakarta residents] using public transportation was 38 percent in 2005. But now the percentage has plunged to 11.5 percent,” Tulus said on Thursday as quoted by Antara.

I believe the use of motorcycles contributes the most to the decrease in that number. It is not surprising because getting a motorcycle is just as easy as getting a new cell phone.

I would request YLKI to reveal how many Jakartans use a motorcycle and then how many of the motorcyclists use noisy exhausts. Then we could urge the Jakarta traffic police chief to do something about it.
