Kompas.comKompas.comThe Law and Human Rights Ministry in cooperation with the Bali Police and other related stakeholders plan to relocate more than 600 inmates from Kerobokan Penitentiary to prisons near the inmates’ respective home towns, Bali police spokesman Sr. Comr. Hariadi says.

“We have consulted the inmates on this matter and they have agreed. This should be done to minimize the potential for further conflicts,” he told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

He said however that all parties would still discuss the technicalities.

He said that the ministry also wanted to find a bigger location to replace Kerobokan Penitentiary. The current penitentiary, which was designed to house 300 inmates, now is home to more than 1,000 inmates.

The announcement comes days after a series of massive riots broke out in Kerobokan. During the unrest, inmates burned down an administration building located within the prison complex.
