urakarta: Batik clothing and batik paintings collected or created by a number of European collectors and artists are being exhibited at a batik exhibition titled “Indonesian Batik, A living Heritage” at the Surakarta City Hall until Feb. 29, 2012.
Jointly organized by the German Embassy to Indonesia and Ekonid (German-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) to mark 60 years of Indonesian-German bilateral relations, the exhibition was also held to introduce the 2010-2013 clean batik initiative project.
“The clean batik initiative will make batik production more stable and economical,” deputy chief of mission of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Heidrun Tempel, when he officially opening the exhibition on Monday.
Claiming to be a lover of batik herself, Tempel said that the project introduced sustainable batik production which would lessen the amount of water, raw materials and energy used by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) producing batik products.
The exhibition at the Surakarta City Hall exhibits both batik clothing collections and batik paintings created by both local and European artists.
