PALEMBANG: The Indonesian men’s team defeated South Korea 3-1 to finish third at the International Sepaktakraw Super Series championship in Palembang on Sunday.

Playing under full support of local spectators at the Palembang Sport and Convention Center (PSCC), the Indonesian trio of Syamsul Hadi, Saiful Rijal and Victoria needed one hour to top the Korean squad.

The Indonesian team won the first set 15-12, but the Korean trio Kim Young Man, Jeong Won Deuk and Kim Min Ho fought back to win the second set 13-15. Recovering from a second-set stumble, the host team dominated the third set, 15-6. In the final set, Syamsul Hadi and his compatriots handily defeated the Korean crew 15-11.

Indonesian head coach Setyo Budi, however, was unsatisfied with the overall performance of the men’s team, citing the result in the previous Super Series championship in Thailand, when the team narrowly lost to the host nation in the final match.

“The failure of the men’s team [to win this year’s tournament] was mostly caused by their performance in the preliminary round, when they were beaten by the Malaysian team. So, they came out as the group runner-up and therefore faced Thailand as the winner of the group A. As a result, they failed to advance into the final round,” said Setyo.
