Trains to get new safety

Prompted by recent road accidents involving trains, the Transportation Ministry will install automatic train protection equipment in trains and railway stations across the nation.

The ministry's directorate general of train said 424 train stations, 350 diesel trains and 400 electric trains would be fitted with the devices by 2015.

“The equipment will reduce the burden on train drivers and thus improve train safety,” the ministry's train safety director, Hermanto Dwiatmoko, said as quoted by tempo.co on Sunday.

Hermanto said the ministry would spend a total of Rp 1 trillion (US$110 million) on the equipment.

“We have proposed that this spending be included in the 2012 budget,” he said.

He said the ministry had tested the equipment at 18 train stations and on 17 trains in Central Java.

Authorities have blamed human error for most recent train accidents. (iwa)
