OGYAKARTA: State railway company PT KAI is set to install a so-called automatic train protection (ATP) system on its trains in a bid to improve safety for its passengers.
The ATP system, which is expected help reduce accidents, will automatically kick-in if a train’s driver violates railroad signals.
“Many train accidents have been caused not because of technical problems but because of human error,” PT KAI’s Operational Region VI Yogyakarta public relations division head, Eko Budiyanto, said on Tuesday.
As a pilot project, according to Eko, the ATP will be installed on the seven trains operated by the regional operation VI, namely the Prameks trains serving the Kutoarjo-Surakarta route, the Madiun Jaya trains and an inspection train belonging to the Directorate General of Railways.
