Two men accused of bribing prosecutor face 3 years in jail

T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has requested that the Bandung Corruption Court sentence Edward M. Bunjamin and Anton Bambang Hadiono, accused of bribing prosecutor Sistoyo, to three years in prison.

The sentence demand against the two defendants was read by three prosecutors at the KPK: Iskandar Marwanto, Sigit Waseso and Medi Iskandar, during a trial at the court on Thursday.

The prosecutors also requested that the panel of judges fine each one Rp 100 million (about US$11,700) or give them another three months in jail.

“Defendants Edward M. Bunjamin and Anton Bambang Hadiono have been proven guilty of corruption as that stipulated in Article 5 of Law No. 31/1999 on Corruption Eradication,” said Medi.

According to Medi, every element in the article that suggested the provision of goods or a promise to a state apparatus had been met.

“Having met the first indictment, the second indictment need not be proven,” Medi added.

The bribery case ensued when Anton, Edward’s subordinate, placed Rp 100 million inside the car of Sistoyo, a prosecutor at the Cibinong Prosecutor’s Office.

The delivery of the money on Nov. 21, 2011, disclosed at the trial, was allegedly a form of bribery to mitigate the charges against Edward, who was accused of falsifying a letter related to the Pasar Festival Market project in Cisarua, Bogor, West Java.

The lawyer representing Edward and Anton, Danu Sebayang, said the indictment was excessive.

“We don’t deny the handing over of money, but it should be noted that our clients came to attend the trial on the sentence demand of the court,” he said.

He did not bring the money, but the agenda on the sentence demand was postponed because prosecutor Efiyati had asked for the money.

“Our client was asked to meet Sistoyo, not to negotiate, but he was asked three times,” said Danu, adding the matter would be disclosed in the next session, with the agenda of a plea bargain on March 29.
