AKARTA: Jakarta vice governor candidate Basuki “Ahok” Tjahja Purnama says that he and running mate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo want to more than double the number of Transjakarta buses in operation.
“It is possible to add an extra 2,000 buses in two years,” to be funded by the Rp 4 trillion (US$436 million) that Jakarta currently allocates for ground transportation each year, Ahok said on Saturday.
Transjakarta currently operates 600 buses. He said that this was a shortage that led to overcrowding that was “among the factors triggering rampant sexual harassment aboard the Transjakarta system”.
Ahok added that if he and Jokowi were elected, they would also merge the different operators now running the Transjakarta so as to improve the management of the service.
Jokowi and Ahok are backed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the Great Indonesian Movement (Gerindra) Party and 24 other nonparliament parties.
