Issue: Showing thighs ‘a porn crime’

The newly established anti-pornography task force says it will crack down on women wearing skirts that fall above the knee as such clothing will be included in the group’s universal definition of pornography.

Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali, the task force’s chairman, said Wednesday that the definition would be universally applied to all regions in the country, regardless of cultural background.

“We have yet to set a standard definition of pornography on which we will base our work. However, there must be a set of universal criteria to define something as pornographic, one of which will be when a woman wears a skirt above the knee,” Suryadharma told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Commission VIII overseeing religious and social affairs on Wednesday.

Your comments:

I think the minister is confusing “pornography” with the very natural situation wherein a member of the opposite sex appears attractive to us. There is nothing wrong with that.

The crime only begins when we cannot control ourselves and the attraction turns into harassment
or worse.

By making statements like this, the minister is admitting that he believes men here have already lost their humanity and became wild animals. As a man, I find that rather insulting.

What kind of “standard” is he talking about? What is his point of reference to that “standard”? He takes Islam as the standard.

Doesn’t the current government respect the culture and religion of others? Or does he think that because the majority of people are Muslim and he can make a universal “standard” like that?

What happened to the Pancasila ideology? Is it just a national logo now with no meaning whatsoever?

This is not a solution at all. He’s just creating more problems. What the government should do is to
educate the people about sex, common courtesy, culture. And punish those rapists.

They say showing thighs is “a porn crime”. I say showing idiocy when you’re a minister is the real crime.
