Journalists beaten, arrested at Nigeria court
Journalists say a group of more than a dozen reporters waiting to cover a court hearing in Nigeria were arrested on the orders of a judge.
The arrests happened Wednesday in Lagos, where journalists were waiting for the start of an inquest over the death of more than 20 people in an August 2010 multiple car crash and explosion. The journalists said a magistrate judge came out of her offices and ordered their arrests. Police officers beat some of the reporters while arresting them.
A police spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
Attacks against journalists remain common in Nigeria, a nation with a robust free press that faces intimidation, harassment and sometimes death for reporting on corruption and violence there.
