Police in Bone regency, South Sulawesi, apprehended two high school students on Monday who were caught using their cell phones allegedly to cheat on the National Examinations (UN).

The incident occurred during a Bahasa Indonesia exam at SMK I Watampone vocational high school in the regency. Exam inspectors witnessed the two students using cell phones hidden in their clothes.

When inspectors examined the cell phones, they apparently contained exam answers. Both students were immediately turned over to the police, who had previously worked to secure the national exam location.

Police also secured as evidence the students’ exam participation cards and cellular phones, as reported by kompas.com.

“We’re only securing these students so that we can find out where these exam answers are coming from and who is sending them. If these were really the actual answers to the exams, then it means that the exam answers have already been leaked,” said Bone police motor patrol unit chief Supiadi.

“I don't know who sent these, sir. They just text-messaged them straight to my cell phone,” said JD, one of the students.

School representatives said that they have done what they could to prevent cheating during the national examinations. They are turning the case over to the relevant authorities.

“In light of everything that has happened, I surrender everything to the police and to the committees. We have tried to warn every student since yesterday that they were not allowed to carry cell phones,” school principal Arifuddin said. (png/swd)
