Landslide, fallen trees disrupt Rinjani trekking

M

ATARAM: Mountain trekking on 3,627 meters of Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) remains impeded due to landslides and fallen trees as the result of extreme weather since December last year.

“It reopened on April 1, but the conditions are not normal due to many landslides and fallen trees along the route,” said Mount Rinjani National Park Center head Agus Budiono in Mataram on Tuesday.

The route was closed in December due to the unsafe conditions for climbers.

Agus said domestic and foreign visitors had started to trek up Rinjani but they were not able to descend to Segara Anak, the crater lake atop the country’s second tallest volcano because several routes are closed by landslides.

“The railings are also damaged and we are currently repairing them,” he said.

Agus added that the repairs and clearing the landslides would be completed by the end of the month and trekking could fully resume in early May.
