em>Your comments on the decision made by the Constitutional Court that annulled a Jakarta city regulation to allow smoking bans in public buildings. The Court ruling requires buildings to provide smokers with smoking rooms.

Special rooms for smokers is essentially a bad idea, particularly for smokers that use it. It is like allowing the smoker to be a second-hand smoker as well and hence will get double portion of the toxic substances in cigarettes. This may be reduced to a minimum, if a powerful exhaust fan was installed. It is still better to quit smoking altogether.

Smoking cigarettes is a nasty habit. Smoking in public is a “crime” that will cause health hazards to others until smokers can stop their exhaled smoke from contaminating the public fresh air.

In fairness to smokers, nasty as they are, let us provide them with special cubicles or smoking rooms at public places. But please do not confuse these rooms with prayer rooms or nurseries. Should businesses consider it too expensive to include “smoking rooms”, it should be fair for them to get the corresponding costs reimbursed from the corporate tobacco taxes paid to the state.

Suction-type exhaust systems must have air-purification systems before being used.

Tobacco companies should be liable for cigarette butts thrown away by indifferent smokers.

The ban is right. An indoor smoking room is wrong. An outdoor smoking patio is a better solution. Keep your eye on worker productivity as people take repeated smoking breaks away from their desks. Welcome to the 20th century, Jakarta.
