AKARTA: Ailing state-owned PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines (Merpati) says it will open three new routes to Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, after receiving three new Boeing 737 series aircraft earlier this month.
The new routes will be Jakarta – Balikpapan, Bandung – Balikpapan, and Balikpapan – Tarakan.
“Balikpapan is the busiest business city on the island [of Kalimantan] and flight demand to and from this city is increasing year after year. This is a good market for Merpati,” Merpati corporate secretary Imam Turidy told The Jakarta Post over the weekend.
Merpati currently serves Balikpapan – Makassar and Balikpapan – Banjarmasin routes daily with B737 aircraft.
The airline is set to receive 8 Boeing 737 aircraft throughout 2012, bringing its operation fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft to 17 by the end of the year.
The airline currently has 29 aircraft operating on a daily basis, including nine Boeing 737 series aircraft, three DHC-6s, two Casa C-212s, one Fokker-100, and 14 MA-60s.
Merpati aims to transport 5 million passengers this year, more than a 100 percent jump from 2.41 million passengers in 2011.
