Amid increasing traffic congestion on Yogyakarta’s ring-roads, the local administration is planning to build a ring road outside the region, which will be called the Yogyakarta Outer Ring Road (JORR).
Yogyakarta Transportation Agency head Tjipto Haribowo was quoted by kompas.com as saying that the ring-roads across the region, particularly the northern road, had become overcrowded since many roads intersected with the ring road.
“New offices, colleges, shops and other buildings have also been popping up along the roads,” he said late on Monday.
According to him, the new scheme would transfer large vehicles such as trucks and buses to the outer roads.
He added that the under the plan, outer roads would be constructed to connect Prambanan, Piyungan, Sedayu and Tempel.
Yogyakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Commission C member Arif Rahman said separately that the construction of the new road should be prioritized near the most congested ring road: the northern road.
Thus, he added, the construction of the new outer road to connect both Prambanan and Piyungan, both regencies of the northern part of Yogyakarta, should be the project’s first priority.
Regional officials affirm that while it may take at least five years to finish the road’s construction, the difficulty faced by local regencies’ administrations in solving land acquisition issues remains one of the main obstacles to the project’s completion. (asa)
