Jombang lecturer caught with marijuana

A lecturer at a private higher education institute (PTS) in Jombang, East Java, was arrested by Kediri Police for possession of marijuana at a hotel room on Jl. KH Ahmad Dahlan,Kediri.

The lecturer, identified as Abdul Komar, 39, originally from Bangkalan in Madura, East Java, was arrested on Monday with 1.97 grams of dried marijuana.

“We received a tip from local residents, which was then followed up by the flying unit. The suspect was arrested in a hotel room along with the evidence,” Kediri Kota Police spokesman Adj. Comr. Surono said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

Surono added that the suspect was alone in the hotel room with three joints in a pack of cigarettes.

“We suspect he intended to smoke the marijuana with his friends,” Surono said.

According to testimony from Abdul, he checked into the hotel just moments before the arrest. He purposely came to Kediri to smoke marijuana, which he ordered from someone in Jakarta for Rp. 300,000 (US$32)

“I haven’t been using [marijuana] for a long time. I used to consume it to relax at home, but never while I’m teaching,” Komar said.

The suspect will be charged with article 11 of 2009 law on narcotics and faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.
