A Ugandan official says more than 12,300 Congolese fleeing violence at home have crossed into Uganda.
Stephen Mallinga, Uganda's minister for disaster preparedness and relief, said in a statement Wednesday that the number keeps rising, with Ugandan authorities now forming a contingency plan for up to 30,000 refugees from Congo.
Mallinga said the Congolese are being resettled in four remote refugee camps.
The Congolese are fleeing renewed violence in the country's east, where a renegade general's militia is terrorizing villagers.
