Bus crash kills six in Medan

MEDAN: Six people were killed and 12 others injured in a minibus accident in South Tapanuli regency, North Sumatra, on Friday.
The accident took place at 9 a.m. when the minibus skidded into a 30-meter-deep ravine in Binanga village in a mountainous area.
The fatalities were all related and were identified as Alwi Nauli Tanjung, 1, Adianto Harahap, 35, Nurifa Siregar, 28, Lamsari Harahap, 31, Minta Ito Rambe, 34 and Khaerani, 45. They came from Tiang Aras village.
The injured victims underwent treatment at Padang Sidempuan Hospital.
The police suspect faulty brakes may have caused the accident.
The driver, Makmur Siregar, survived the crash and fled before surrendering to the police six hours later.
South Tapanuli Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Subandriya said that Makmur was accompanied by a relative when he gave himself up.
“He holed up at his relative’s house before coming to the police,” Subandriya said.
