International animal rights non-profit ProFauna, says it will build a wildlife sanctuary for aging, sick and disabled animals in Malang, West Java.
The sanctuary, to be located at the Petungsewu Wild Animals Rescue Center would accept all animals, not just rare ones, ProFauna Indonesia chief Rosek Nursahid said.
"There is no way that elderly animals can be returned to the wild, because that would endanger their safety. That's why we're building this sanctuary," Rosek said on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
This effort is one of several public campaigns the group has held this the year to promote animal causes.
In April, ProFauna held a campaign in several major Indonesian cities to discourage women from using cosmetic purposes made from animal products for. Models posed on sidewalks, holding banners saying, "Beautiful without killing wildlife".
In February, the group held protests against the illegal killing of sea turtles in Denpasar, Bali. Activists said that turtles had been killed for their meat, eggs, shells and body parts used to make souvenirs. (png/iwa)
