AKARTA: The annual Jakarnaval will hit the streets on Sunday afternoon as part of many events planned to commemorate the city’s 485th anniversary.
Jakarta Culture and Tourism Agency deputy chief Tinia Budiati said on Thursday that the carnival would feature decorative cars and thousands of participants, including bicycle communities as well as musical and theatrical groups, of all ages and cultures.
“We expect to showcase Jakarta’s multiethnic society and its various cultural roots,” Tinia said.
The 13th annual carnival will kick off at 3 p.m. and run for three hours, traveling along a route starting in front of City Hall on Jl. Merdeka Selatan and heading to Jl. MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta, and taking a U-turn at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle before ending at the National Monument (Monas) southwest plaza.
Artists will perform at the plaza until 10 p.m. The administration is expecting tens of thousands of spectators at the carnival.
The administration will also hold the annual trade fair and exhibition, Jakarta Fair, as part of the celebration. This year, it will run from June 14 to July 15 in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.
