In the run-up to next month’s election, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo is highlighting his work to reduce congestion in the city.

Fauzi said he had built 86.25 kilometers of busway corridors and added three busway feeder routes between 2007 and 2011, make for 11 corridors making plying 183.6 kilometers.

"In 2012, we will extend the Pulo Gadung-Bekasi and Kali Deres-Tangerang corridors. We will add four new busway feeder routes," Fauzi said on Friday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

These efforts, he said, had increased the number of busway passengers from 61.43 million in 2007 to 114.7 million in 2011.

His administration is also in the process of building two new overpasses that Fauzi estimates will be complete by the end of 2012.

He said that he wanted to develop mass rapid transportation. Fauzi called the measures the first step in modernizing Jakarta's public transportation system. (png/iwa)
