Jakarta: The Democratic Party has rejected a proposal to set up a House of Representatives (DPR) special committee (Pansus) to investigate the fraudulent Hambalang project.
The call to set up the committee was made by several lawmakers from House Commission X overseeing sports.
Democratic Party faction chairwoman Nurhayati Ali Assegaf said the committee was not required as a smaller team, a working committee (Panja), was investigating the alleged irregularities in the Rp 1.52 trillion (US$162.64 million) construction project.
Several Democratic Party politicians, including chairman Anas Urbaningrum, have been implicated in the scandal.
“A special committee is not a solution to the reveal the case. I believe that the existing working committee will be able to reveal the case because it consists of qualified lawmakers from Commission X,” Nurhayati told reporters at the DPR on Friday.
The call for the establishment of a special committee to launch a thorough investigation into the case was first made by lawmaker Agus
Hermanto, also from the Democratic Party, who chairs the working committee on the case.
Unlike fellow Democratic Party lawmaker Nurhayati, House Speaker Marzuki Alie said the establishment of a special committee was worth considering due to the complexity of the case.
