Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo expressed hopes that the city’s residents would participate in making the city a better place.
“Building, maintaining and nurturing this city cannot just be the responsibility of city administrators. City administrators also need the participation of residents,” Fauzi said on Sunday, as quoted by kompas.com.
“Citizen participation is one aspect of good city governance,” he said.
He praised events such as Sunday’s Jakarnaval, which celebrated the city’s 485th anniversary, for bringing the people of Jakarta together.
He was hopeful that such events, where culture and traditions go on display, could give feelings of love and pride amongst Jakartans for their city.
People who love their city would be more likely to participate in taking care of their city, Fauzi said. These acts of participation can be as simple as making sure that they don’t litter. (png/iwa)
