RI women’s shuttlers fail to reach to Indonesian Open quarterfinals

The last hope for the host country to see one of its players advance to the women’s singles’ quarterfinals of the 2012 Djarum Indonesian Open evaporated after Aprilia Yuswandari suffered a loss in the second round on Thursday.

Aprilia, ranked 46th in the world, succumbed to world No. 5 Saina Nehwal of India despite winning the second the set against the fifth-seeded player for a final score of 17-21, 21-14 and 13-21, Antara news agency reported.

In the quarterfinals, Nehwal, who won the Indonesia Open in 2009 and 2010, will meet the winner of the match between third-seed Wang Shixian of China and Singaporean Gu Juan.

The Garuda squad’s other female shuttlers packed their bags in the first round of play on Wednesday.

Adriyanti Firdasari, who will be representing Indonesia in the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, retired from her match against Chinese Wang Yihan in the first set at 7-7 after suffering an injury in her right foot and being wheeled out of the arena.

Meanwhile, Maria Febe Kusumastuti, surrendered to Indian player PV Sindhu 21-13, 18-21 and 19-21.

Indonesian youngster, Ana Rovita, who defeated her senior Lindaweni Fanetri in the qualifying round, was edged out by Gu Juan 20-22, 17-21. (asa)
