Comment: Gramedia burns books ‘defaming’ Prophet

June 14, p9

In an act condemned by critics as “superfluous”, publishing company PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama (GPU) on Wednesday symbolically burned around 200 copies of a book said to have defamed Prophet Muhammad.

The book burning took place in the front yard of Bentara Budaya, a non-profit cultural center linked to the publisher, only two days after the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) reported it to the police and demanded it destroy all copies of the book.

Better to burn the books than have their business burned down. Recycling would have been more
responsible.

Linda

That’s very sad and over the top, very reminiscent of the Nazis when they did the book burnings don’t you think?

Joe

The reason it’s reminiscent of Nazi book burnings is because the FPI is essentially a fascist movement. “Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings,” as Heinrich Heine put it.

Abdul Rahman Reijerink

Why does the FPI love bad things and hate good things?
