he 38-year-old actress Anna Tarigan, who has just finished shooting the Indonesian-Korean TV series Saranghae, I Love You and children’s flick Berandal-berandal Ciliwung (The Rascals of Ciliwung), an adaptation of a 1970s novel of the same title, tends to be picky in terms of choosing roles or films, saying that she is focused on raising her children.

“It was quite challenging playing in Saranghae, I Love You and Berandal-berandal Ciliwung because both projects were shot at almost the same time. The other reason is I play markedly different characters in the two productions.

In Saranghae, I star as a funny Balinese woman, while for Berandal, I transform into a Batak [North Sumatra] woman. It was tough to portray a Balinese woman because I had to speak with a Balinese accent, which is not easy to master.

Berandal posed a different challenge as the film was set in a dam in Bogor [West Java], so I spent most of the time filming around the water and was bitten by bugs. But I enjoyed every second of it because it felt so good to be able to work with a bunch of young and talented people.

As for Saranghae, this is the first time I have appeared in a sinetron [soap opera] since taking a break from the industry for some time.

When I was still single, I did not mind shooting everyday, day and night, for a sinetron, but now I am a mother of four.

I have rejected many offers, especially those that require a long period of filming because I need more time with my kids. They are now my top priority.

I sometimes take my kids to the shooting locations in a bid to let them know about my career and the movie industry itself.

I have told them that I cannot be with them 24 hours a day because I have to work. Thanks to the Internet, I maintain good communication with my children through Skype.

When I am not busy filming, I am usually at home, playing in the garden or swimming with my kids, cooking some healthy dishes for the whole family.

I always wake up early in the morning, even at the weekends, to prepare breakfast and lunch.

I love veggies, so I like to cook anything with veggies with my own recipes. I, for instance, like to make stir-fried jicama [Pachyrhizus erosus], mixed with honey and olive oil.

Well, I know it is not a common thing here to cook jicama, but jicama has lots of benefits, including keeping our skin healthy. My kids’ favorite is jus bidadari [fairy juice], also made of jicama.

For cooking, I prefer using organic products and avoid the use of monosodium glutamate [MSG].

Yes, I am concerned about assisting people to live a healthy lifestyle. I have been running a business in herbal medicine for a couple of years, focusing on giving consultations on natural beauty and health.”
