Social media will play a greater role in this year's Bulan Bahasa ( Malay Language Month).

Popular Malay singer Imran Ajmain, who is one of the ambassadors for the event, will be using Twitter to reach out to the Malay community.

He will then create a song with lyrics contributed by the community. The event was launched on Sunday by Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts.

Organized by the Malay Language council, the event aims to remind the Malay speaking community to be conscious of the use of the Malay language while communicating everyday; both in spoken and written form.

'The way we use the language and the situation in which we use the language are ever changing. We have to be aware and keep up with the changes so that the Malay language will stay relevant in a community that is multi-lingual and multi cultural,' said Yaacob.
