State train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is planning 14 additional economy trains for the Idul Fitri holiday season this year.

PT KAI spokesman Sugeng Priyono said the additional trains would be operated on Aug. 12-27 with the exodus peak expected at Aug. 16 and the returning peak on Aug. 25.

“The tickets can be bought from July 1,” he said in an e-mail. “We are only selling tickets at 100 percent of seat capacity in every class.”

In the past, trains were often over crowded with many passengers standing.

Sugeng said each train had a capacity between 684 and 896 seats depending on the number of cars per train.

“Once the train is fully sold, we will not sell more tickets,” he said.

He also reminded passengers to buy tickets at official booths and that security officers would only allow those with tickets to enter the waiting halls at train stations.

“We will check the names on tickets with passengers’ IDs. Those who are found with different IDs onboard trains will be asked to alight at the next station,” he said.

In addition to the 14 additional economy trains, the train operator has 178 regular trains planned for this year’s Idul Fitri holiday season and additional 18 commercial trains. (nvn)
