Panwaslu passive in campaign supervision: ICW

Corruption watchdog Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) said on Saturday that the Jakarta Elections Supervisory Committee – Panwaslu) had been less active in supervising the campaign period over the last couple of weeks.

According to ICW’s political corruption division member, Abdullah Dahlan, Panwaslu, for instance, should have taken firm actions to incumbent Fauzi Bowo who did not take leave from his post as Jakarta Governor during the campaign period. Fauzi even recently showed up at a worker gathering as Jakarta Governor but he would deliver his promises if he was reelected in the next election in front of the workers, Abdullah said on Saturday at a public discussion in Cikini, Central Jakarta.

“This example shows that the supervisory committee has not performed its duties and authorities to supervise the course of the election,” he said. .Abdullah, tribunnews.com reported, further criticized the committee by saying that it should have attended such public events in which Fauzi might violate his position as an incumbent candidate and took advantage for his own sake.

The Jakarta election is slated to run on July 11 with six gubernatorial candidates vying for the city’s top office. The campaign period is due to end on Saturday. (riz)
