An elderly husband and wife in Tangerang City were stabbed and burned to death by their son, who has confessed to the crime, police say.

The couple, identified as Yo Ribut, and his wife, Lie Sek Nio, both 60, were siomay dumpling vendors. Their bodies were found in their home in Karang Sari subdistrict on Friday.

Police said that Yo and Lie were murdered by their third child, Budi, who reported the death of his
parents to his siblings.

Santi, his eldest sister, reported Budi to the police after he showed no sign of concern or regret about their parents’ death.

Detectives from the Tangerang City Police questioned Budi and later detained him as a suspect in the deaths.

“My parents were kind to everyone. They never had problems with our neighbors at all,” Santi said.

Encan, another sibling, said she suspected that Budi killed her parents to repay the debts he incurred due to a compulsive gambling problem.

“You are really a rebellious son! You are so cursed, killing our parents just for money!” an overwrought Encan shouted at Budi as officers escorted him from the house.

According to neighbors, Budi was unemployed, unlike like his siblings, and had a reputation as the family troublemaker due to his gambling.

Tangerang City Police chief Sr. Comr. Wahyu Widada confirmed that the police named Budi as their sole suspect in the double homicide.

“The evidence we found at the crime scene and testimony from a number of people led officers to arrest Budi,” Wahyu said.

Budi was named a suspect based on his sister’s statement after detectives completed interrogating him at police headquarters.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Tangerang General Hospital for autopsies.
