A police detective at the Baron Police sub-precinct in Nganjuk, East Java, was reportedly beaten by seven drunk men on Tuesday after the officer interrupted them while drinking.
Brig. Wahyu Tri PS said that he went to the stall to tell the men to stop drinking. “Local residents objected to their activity, so I told them that they better stop,” Wahyu said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
“They were angry, and even though they knew I was a police officer, they assaulted me,” said Wahyu, who suffered bruises to his face and body.
Several residents witnessed the beating but did nothing to stop it out of fear of the angry mob.
All assailants except one resident, identified later as Agus Dwi Wiratno, managed to flee the scene.
Agus was later questioned by the police and revealed the identity of the other assailants.
Later in the day, police arrested three other culprits: Suhartono, Markhaban and Dodik Irianto. Police are still trying to locate the other three suspects.
The police said that the men would be charged with assault as stipulated in Article 170 of the Criminal Code. (lfr)
