rosecutors on Tuesday indicted Afriyani Susanti, the allegedly drunk driver who killed nine pedestrians in an accident in January in Gambir, Central Jakarta, on drugs charges at the West Jakarta District Court.
Prosecutor Tamalia Roza said that Afriyani was charged with illegal drug trafficking and drug possession as stipulated under the 2009 Narcotics Law. If found guilty, Afriyani could face up to 20 years’ imprisonment.
In her indictment, Tamalia said that Afriyani and her friends Deni Mulyana, Ary Sendy Tridiarto, Adistina Putri Grani and Pritta Audya Ramadhanie had illegally purchased and received narcotics listed as Category I.
“Afriyani and her friends bought ecstasy twice,” Tamalia said as quoted by tempo.co.
Afriyani’s lawyer, Efrizal, said that they would deny the charges, saying that his client, who is also accused of murder, was not a drug user.
The defendant drove into 13 pedestrians, killing nine and injuring four, on Jl. M. Ridwan Rais, in Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Jan. 22. She had been
clubbing before she lost control of her vehicle.
