Woman reports extortion from con artist

A woman filed a police report about extortion by a man who claimed to be the head of the personnel bureau at the Jakarta Police headquarters, kompas.com reported on Friday.

YS, 36, said she received a call from the adjutant of the officer, who asked her to call his superior on his cellular phone. She made the call and was ordered to transfer Rp 5 million (US$530) to a bank account. The con artist claimed his wife needed the money for her activities.

YS realized on Thursday she had fallen for a scam when a friend who had a connection to the police’s personnel bureau said that the phone number was not recognized and that the office had not contacted the victim.
