Bank Indonesia’s (BI) Jambi chapter will be providing Rp 1.7 trillion (US$180 million) to meet the demand for cash during Ramadhan.

Dede Suprayitno, BI Jambi’s deputy head, who is in charge of the payment systems division, said the amount was three times higher than money provided during regular months. “Normally, the demand for cash in Jambi is around Rp 400-500 billion per month,” Dede said.

He added that BI’s Jambi chapter would provide special vehicles, located in public areas, where residents could easily change their Rp 50,000 and Rp 100,000 bank notes into smaller denominations.

In the festive season, Muslims usually withdraw more money than usual in order to make donations to the poor and/or give gifts to their relatives.

Dede also suggested that Jambi residents should only change money with official BI representatives in order to prevent fraud and help keep counterfeit bank notes out of circulation.
