After conducting a manhunt for two weeks, the North Sumatra Police on Thursday arrested Syamsyuar Nasution, 44, who was accused of stealing Rp 1.6 billion (US$169,400) in cash from Bank Rakyat Indonesia’s (BRI) Medan branch.
Syamsyuar, the former head of BRI’s Karya Wisata unit, was arrested in a hotel in Pekanbaru, Riau. The police confiscated two X-trail vans and cash amounting to Rp 828.70 million, along with a receipt of a land purchase and a key to a safety deposit box. North Sumatra Police’s general crime unit head Adj. Sr. Comr. Andry Setiawan said that Syamsyuar stole the money on July 6.
“The cash was taken from a safety deposit box before being taken out of North Sumatra,” Andry said on Thursday, adding that the suspect had moved from one hotel to another in Riau.
