West Kalimantan’s Pontianak administration, alongside the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) performed drug-testing on hundreds of civil servants in a bid to lessen the impact of drug abuse in the workplace.

As a result of urine tests conducted recently, morphine was found in the samples of three out of the 722 civil servants tested, Pontianak Mayor Sutarmidji said.

He said that he had questioned the three employees over the results. The three of them, he continued, claimed that they have recently undergone medical treatment and had taken medication. Tests will be performed to verify this claim.

“I am not sure whether there are any civil servants [in the city administration] who use drugs, but we need to take necessary precautions,” said Sutarmidji.
