JAKARTA: Prosecutors have sought a five-year jail term for the Semarang Mayor on charges of bribing local councillors in a graft case involving the 2012 Semarang city budget.

A five-year jail term is a maximum sentence for bribery.

“We call on the judges to hand down a guilty verdict for the defendant Soemarmo for violating Article 5 of the anti-graft law,” prosecutor KMS Roni said in his indictment during a trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday.

The mayor has been implicated in the scandal after the KPK caught his subordinate city secretary Akhmat Zaenuri red handed with two local councillors, Agung Purno Sarjono of the National Mandate Party (PAN) and Sumartono of the Democratic Party.

The three were arrested with 21 envelopes containing Rp 40 million (US$4,360) in November last year. An investigation commenced by the antigraft commission found Rp 500 million in the city secretary’s office.
