Donny Alamsyah’s acting career began in the biopic Gie in 2005, but he has since become known for acting in action movies, including 9 Naga (9 Dragons), Merah Putih (Red and White) trilogy and The Raid.

He is currently planning to direct his own movie, with encouragement from renowned Indonesian director Garin Nugroho. Staying true to his previous body of work, the movie will be all action. Donny is still working on securing financing for the project.

When he’s not working, Donny loves to travel around the archipelago, taking photos and making videos of his trips. He shares the results on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

“I like to document things for memory’s sake and I like the things I make to be shared with other people,” he said.

Favorite holiday destination…

Sea, beach and cities along coastlines. If my brother is going on a diving trip, I’ll go with him. Sometimes I go to the mountains too.

The last holiday I had …

I recently went to Thailand and visited Phi Phi Island, Krabi and Phuket. While we were there, we also tried some pretty unique food, like fried scorpion and maggots. The scorpion was awful, but the maggot actually wasn’t so bad.

Holiday destination with family…

I can go almost anywhere if I am alone. If I haven’t been to a place, I’d go with my trip buddies and check it out, the accommodation, and that kind of stuff. Once I’ve explored a destination, then I’d take my family, my parents and nephews. Sometimes I take my wife somewhere we’ve never been. She’s quite adventurous, so she doesn’t mind.

A place I want to visit in Indonesia…

I’ve been getting plenty of tips from friends and family that Indonesia has plenty of cool places for holidaying. I saw their photos, listened to their stories and I pretty much got inspired to visit these places. I plan to visit Lampung in Sumatra. I’ve heard it’s beautiful and it’s quite close to Jakarta. Why go all the way to Raja Ampat if we have destinations that are just as good close by?

I’ll probably go there on my motorbike. I’ll explore Lampung’s southern area, around Krakatau and Sebuku for a week, and then I’ll explore the western part. When I’ve saved enough money, of course.

Things I’d like to do during the holiday…

I like to make the trip with a concept. I want to help kids across the nation have their own playgrounds. I don’t know how to do this yet, but I know I want to make it happen. I also want to make video of kids expressing their wish to visit other places in Indonesia, then take the video there and play the video to kids in the area. It’s like the greeting friends program on the radio, but through the medium of video. I think it can bring a bonding feeling to children across the whole of Indonesia.+ Tifa Asrianti
