Top-seeded Novak Djokovic advanced to the Rogers Cup quarterfinals Friday, beating Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-4 in a rain-delayed match.
The match, washed out by rain Thursday, was suspended for 2 1/2 hours by more showers with the second-ranked Djokovic leading 6-4, 4-3.
Djokovic, the defending champion, was scheduled to play his quarterfinal later Friday, facing Tommy Haas, who beat Radek Stepanek 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Richard Gasquet, Mardy Fish, John Isner and Janko Tipsarevic also advanced. The 14th-seeded Gasquet beat fourth-seed Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-2, Fish topped Juan Monaco 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, eighth-seeded Isner edged No. 12 Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4, and Tipsarevic beat Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-4.
In the women's Rogers Cup at Montreal, top-ranked Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the tournament on Friday because of a knee injury.
Azarenka, who had a first-round bye, was level at 3-3 in her second-round match against Tamira Paszek when it was suspended by rain Thursday night.
The 23-year-old Belarusian won two Olympic medals in London, taking gold in mixed doubles and bronze in singles.
"I hope it is a short-term thing, but I don't know," Azarenka said. "I have to kind of stop and just take a little bit of time off because I absolutely had no rest for a long period of time."
Azarenka said she'll skip the Western and Southern Open next week in Cincinnati. Getting ready for the final major of the year is her top priority, she said.
"The first is to get healthy, to make sure that I'm a hundred percent ready to play at the (U.S.) Open," Azarenka said.
Meanwhile, Lucie Safarova upset Samantha Stosur 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) to reach the quarterfinals. Caroline Wozniacki, the 2010 champion, defeated qualifier Kiki Bertens 7-5, 6-1.
Petra Kvitova dispatched Marion Bartoli 6-1, 6-1. Aleksandra Wozniak led American Christina McHale 7-6 (5), 5-2 when rain interrupted their third-round match.
Second-ranked Maria Sharapova withdrew from the tournament Wednesday because of a virus.
